There's something electrifying about being a witness to a movement, especially one as profound as that initiated by EPIC for Girls. Their recent inaugural event, "An EPIC Day with Dawn Staley," held at the College of Saint Mary’s Fieldhouse, was nothing short of spectacular, marked by the gathering of nearly 600 supporters.

The celebrated Women’s Basketball Head Coach for the University of South Carolina, Dawn Staley, graced the occasion with her deep insights. Her heartfelt accounts from her journey, starting from the housing projects of Philadelphia to becoming one of the nation's most celebrated coaches, were imbued with authenticity.

She imparted the lesson that "Your passion should be the compass of your life.” A sentiment that echoed through the hall and, undoubtedly, the hearts of many.

EPIC for Girls, despite being in its youthful eighth year, already plays a pivotal role in empowering young girls of color through sports, education, and mentorship.

Participants from across the region, representing various organizations, highlighted the significance of establishing an equitable platform for all, especially in sports.

The testimonies from people like Ken Fox, who introduced softball to girls who'd never known the game, illustrated how sports can significantly shape lives.

Fox of the Black Police Officers' Association, coach of the EPIC for Girls' softball team, and an EPIC for Girls grant recipient, said, “We created a couple of softball teams for girls who have never played, understanding the profound impact of sports in imparting life skills to young girls.”

Moreover, voices from the likes of Dalhia Lloyd, the EPIC for Girls Board President, underlined the deep-rooted values of teamwork, leadership, and the life-altering impacts of sports.

On leadership, Lloyd expressed her sentiments, “Sports instilled in me the value of teamwork and collaboration. It’s shaped my professional journey and personal connections. It’s taught me both how to lean on and how to lead.”
