The Omaha Sister Cities Association will welcome a martial arts school from Shizuoka, Japan, Omaha's Japanese Sister City, from March 22-23, 2025, for a collaboration with B&B Boxing Gym and Butler-Gast YMCA in North Omaha.
The exchange program unites the Shizuoka Kenyunjuku Karate School and Terrance “Bud” Crawford’s renowned B&B Boxing Gym to offer minority youth in North Omaha an opportunity to experience the power of martial arts and cultural connection.
Students will cross-train with the visiting karate group, learning about the history of karate, its cultural significance in Japan, and foundational techniques. In return, the karate students from Shizuoka will gain insights into American boxing and the gym’s impactful community outreach efforts. The following day, March 23, the program extends its reach with a public demonstration event featuring karate and boxing skills at the Butler-Gast YMCA.
“This is a cultural exchange focused on Omaha youth, inspiring them to lead healthier lives and choose better paths for their futures,” said Joe Chapuran, board member of the Omaha Sister Cities Association and international trade consultant.
Sponsorships are vital to fund the karate team’s trip and ensure the program’s success. Businesses and organizations invested in North Omaha's growth and cultural enrichment are invited to contribute.
