Women’s Fund of Omaha Features EPIC for Girls Executive Director Kimberly Thomas
Story by Xitlally Velasco
Kimberly Thomas, executive director of EPIC for Girls, was recently featured in Omaha Women’s Fund Magazine, sharing her journey from her childhood as the only girl on a boys’ T-ball team to leading a nonprofit dedicated to empowering girls of color through sports.
In the feature, Thomas reflects on her personal experiences and addresses the systemic inequities in sports, from the “pay-to-play” model to the lack of resources for girls of color. Under her leadership, EPIC provides nearly $300,000 annually to nonprofit sports programs in Omaha, builds partnerships with schools to bridge resource gaps, and advocates for sports, as Thomas says, “a right, not a privilege.”
EPIC promotes higher graduation rates, leadership development, and healthier lifestyles by keeping girls engaged in sports. The organization’s all-women board of directors exemplifies the mission of uplifting girls of color.
Thomas describes her role as the perfect blend of her passions for sports and child advocacy, “It’s refreshing to work upstream, bringing hope and opportunity to kids, instead of reacting to crises. I couldn’t love my job more.”
