‘An EPIC Discussion’ Recap: Keeping Girls in the Game and Uniting the Community for Change
This afternoon, EPIC for Girls hosted “An EPIC Discussion,” a dynamic event focused on addressing the high dropout rate of young girls in sports, particularly girls of color. Held at the Venue at the Highlander, the event brought together local leaders, athletes, and advocates to explore the systemic, social, and financial barriers that cause 43% of girls to drop out of sports by age 13.
Our interns from Girl Talk, a collaborative sports marketing program between EPIC for Girls and Lozafina, were on hand to capture the energy and highlights of the event.
“I enjoyed today’s event a lot; not only did I meet some empowering and inspiring women, but I was able to learn more about their backgrounds and how important our own individual stories are to our upbringings,” said Sahory Martinez, Girl Talk intern.
The event featured prominent panelists, including Dr. Tragil Wade-Johnson, founder of America’s Big Sisters; Markeshia Grant, creative development coach and motivational speaker; and WNBA player Reshanda Gray, founder of No Gray Areas. Each shared personal stories and strategies for ensuring girls, especially those from underserved communities, have equal access to sports and opportunities for success.
“An EPIC Discussion” was a call to action, inspiring the community to rally together and create meaningful solutions to keep girls engaged in sports, fostering leadership, confidence, and a brighter future for all. However, this is just the beginning; let’s continue to build a legacy of empowerment, inclusion, and transformation for the next generation of female athletes.
