Championing Change: EPIC for Girls’ Panel on Equity in Women’s Sports

By Xitlally Velasco

EPIC for Girls is excited to host "An EPIC Discussion: Championing Equity and Elevating Women in Sports" on Friday, September 20th, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at the Venue At Highlander Accelerator on 2120 N 30th St.

The event, focused on advancing equity in sports for girls of color, will feature a panel of influential leaders from the sports and nonprofit sectors, including:

Dr. Tragil Wade: CEO and Founder of America’s Big Sisters and Executive Director of Wade’s World Foundation, where she has raised over $3.4 million to support youth in overcoming challenges.

“I am proud to support EPIC for Girls because its internship program is making a real difference by engaging girls of color in sports,” said Dr. Tragil Wade. “I strongly believe in the importance of this opportunity, especially because I wish I had such a chance when I began my career at a sports agency 15 years ago.”

Markeshia Grant: Founder and CEO of Savvy Skills, LLC, a company focused on transforming athletes’ mindsets. She’s also a motivational speaker and national girls’ basketball evaluator.

“I decided to participate in the Epic for Girls panel because “we are witnessing the most unprecedented time in the history of women’s sports, where its influence is transcending boundaries and empowering generations,” said Grant. “The momentum is unparalleled, and I am deeply grateful to be a part of this transformative journey, contributing to a legacy that is reshaping the future of sports for women and girls around the world!”

Raven Johnson: A key member of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks Women’s Basketball Team, the 2024 NCAA champions, and a pioneer in NIL partnerships with Black-owned beauty brand Parfait.

EPIC for Girls continues its mission to advocate for, fund, and develop solutions to increase access to sports for girls of color. The organization aims to ensure every girl has the chance to succeed, regardless of background.

Kimberly Thomas, CEO of EPIC for Girls, emphasizes the significance of this event: "Sports can change lives, but many girls of color still face barriers to access. This discussion brings together powerful voices to confront these challenges and inspire change.”
