Lozafina Applauds Client Hiya’s Leadership in Supporting Omaha Students After Tragedy

By Xitlally Velasco

The Lozafina team would like to recognize the incredible efforts of our client, Hiya, in paving the way for healing for Omaha Northwest High students after Tuesday’s shooting.

On Tuesday, September 10, a 15-year-old student at Omaha Northwest High was critically injured in a shooting allegedly by a 14-year-old classmate. The victim is now stable, while the shooter, reportedly struggling with bullying, is in custody and charged as an adult. Omaha Public Schools have since offered counseling support for students affected by the incident.

On September 11, WOWT, a local news station, featured Hiya’s founder, Alejandra Wells, highlighting her efforts in helping students process the trauma and cope with the aftermath of the tragedy.

Hiya, a mental health advocacy organization, strives to empower young people to speak up, be kind, and create a culture of good mental health for their schools and communities.

Wells shared healthy ways for her peers to express their emotions.

“Having like a little group hangout, that could really relieve some stress. You could have a little group chat. Just text whenever you don’t feel okay. You can reach out like that,” Wells told WOWT. “I like to FaceTime people. I like to let them know that I’m there without being physically there.”

Wells also discussed how teachers and school districts can take action when they see bullying in their classrooms.

Hiya’s website lists several mental health resources for anyone to access whenever necessary.

As we reflect on this tragic event, Lozafina is proud to support Hiya’s crucial work in promoting mental health awareness for Omaha’s youth. Let’s keep the conversation going, ensuring that every student feels seen, heard, and supported on their path to healing and growth.
