Community Dance Initiatives

ON OUR BLOCK: A running feature of inspiring events, people and stories.

By Tiffany Brazda

Omaha has a vibrant nonprofit dance community for adults beyond the stage. Local modern dance groups are making dance more accessible for all skill levels through community performances and opportunities for community members to learn something new.

Dance Club!, organized by nonprofit dance company tbd dance collective, is a movement class that is open to any skill level and goes through a modern dance style class in the gorgeous Luli Creative House. A Lozafina staff member or two have been known to attend this judgment-free dance class. Lessons happen on Saturdays monthly and last around 90 minutes. There is a suggested donation of $15. Check out the next class on June 15.

If you’d rather soak in a performance, the tbd dance collective will perform “Line in Time” at Bemis Park on Saturday, June 22, at 7 p.m. This performance will celebrate the summer solstice in an open outdoor space on a mobile stage. Grab your tickets for either movement event at www.tbddancecollective.org.

Interested in a collaborative dance experience? Check out one of the upcoming workshops put on by Vox Dance Collective. The Business of Busyness Movement + Choreography Workshop puts attendees in Millwork Commons to explore the feelings behind a busy life. Learn more about the project and the other workshops here.

Maybe learning a dance style from your days is more your style. Omaha Jitterbugs offers classes for all different skill levels on the art of the lindy hop. Classes are reasonably priced, and tickets are available on the Omaha Jitterbugs website.
