Join the Historic Fiestas Patrias Parade, Celebrate Latino Heritage Month!

By Xitlally Velasco

On Saturday, Sept. 14, get ready to walk in the vibrant Fiestas Patrias Parade and celebrate Latino Heritage Month alongside the consulates of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. This colorful parade honors Mexico’s Independence from Spain, commemorating Father Miguel Hidalgo’s famous “Grito de Dolores.”

Celebrated on Sept. 16th, Mexico's Independence Day marks the country's liberation from Spanish rule. The movement began in 1810, when Father Miguel Hidalgo, a parish priest from the town of Dolores, issued the historic "Grito de Dolores,” calling for the end of 300 years of Spanish colonialism. This powerful cry ignited the Mexican War of Independence, a decade-long struggle for justice, equality, and freedom.

Every year, Mexico’s Independence Day is marked with national pride — parades, fireworks, music, and reenactments of Hidalgo's rallying cry. It is a time to celebrate the enduring spirit of the Mexican people and their fight for sovereignty.

This year, the Casa de la Cultura presents the annual Fiestas Patrias Festival, a weekend full of festivities from September 13-15, 2024 along historic South 24th Street in Omaha. The event features live music, carnival rides, food vendors, a car show, zumbamania, a health fair, and a mariachi mass. Join the Independence celebrations of Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador and immerse yourself in this rich cultural experience.
