5 Essentials That Keep Josefina Loza Grounded as She Enters the Omaha Press Club Hall of Fame

MY FIVE: A series where we ask Omahans to share their five favorite things

By Xitlally Velasco

It’s been a while! We’re thrilled to bring you a new edition of “My Five” from the one and only Josefina Loza, founder and CEO of Lozafina Marketing and Public Relations. She juggles everything from mentoring future journalists, winning awards, co-founding businesses, giving speeches and lessons, ghostwriting, going on national TV, and being a mom and daughter, all while making it look easy.

Without further adieu, we present to you Loza’s biggest life essentials.

Tomorrow, I’m going to be inducted into the Omaha Press Club's Journalists of Excellence Hall of Fame, and I’m beyond humbled by the notion that I’m worthy of such an honor. While discussing this recognition with the Lozafina team, I was encouraged to do a "My Five" so people could get a glimpse into my life.

My faith - God is everything.

My family - especially my two beautiful daughters and parents.

My laptop - which is my livelihood.

My wine - which helps me relax.

My dogs - who are serious yappers, but they bring me so much joy.

Grr, this is tough.

When we kicked off the Lozafina "My Five" series—a throwback to something I did years ago at the Omaha World-Herald—I knew asking people to pinpoint the items that best represent them would be challenging. We ruled out family, faith, pets, and cell phones since those are obvious reflections of people. Instead, we encouraged them to dig deeper and reveal the essence of their personalities through material objects that offer a curious peek into their hidden lives.

So, my list is null and void, leaving me with just my laptop and wine. Ha! That sounds like me to a tee. Hi! I’m Josefina Loza, founder and CEO of Lozafina Marketing and Public Relations. I’m a workaholic who decompresses with a glass of cabernet sauvignon.

Hmm, that sounds a bit addictive-ish.

But the reality of my life is I work hard, building businesses and communities. After a long day at the office, I sip my wine and blissfully fall back into my thoughts or catch up on the news.

Back to "My Five," here’s the list I’ve cobbled together:

1. News.

We must support local journalism. They’re the watchdogs of our communities, ensuring that the capitalistic powers that be are held accountable. Without them, our society would lack the necessary checks and balances.

2. Laptop.

It truly is my livelihood at Lozafina. I go almost everywhere with it. I’m like one of those memes of people taking their laptops to the beach, working at all hours. It’s the entrepreneurial lifestyle.

3. Wine.

Specifically, cabernet sauvignon. I love a medium-bodied wine bursting with aromas and flavors. Maybe it’s a nod to my nightlife column days at the World-Herald. Just as vodka and whiskey drinkers savor the burn, I enjoy the brawn and finesse of a lavishly oaky wine blend.

4. Traveling.

There’s no greater satisfaction than buckling up on a Boeing and feeling it wheel up into the air, especially when stationary and landlocked in Nebraska. I don’t care where I go, just away for a few days. Then, it’s back to work.

5. People.

The Covid-19 pandemic was a shock to me. Every fiber in my body craves human connection. I love talking to people, being around strangers, and meeting new folks in grocery stores or at open-table restaurants. I love learning about their backgrounds, what makes them tick, and hearing their stories of failures and successes. It moves me to want to help others as much as I can. As a longtime journalist, my favorite thing was writing human interest pieces because it was an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the human spirit.

There you have it — my essentials for life, work, and staying connected.

Getting to know people is why we resurrected the "My Five" series and will continue it. Please nominate people or send us your tops in this Google form.
