Freedomtainment Presents Omaha Freedom Festival: A Celebration of Juneteenth
By: Xitlally Velasco
Freedomtainment, a non-profit organization in North Omaha, will host The Omaha Freedom Festival on Saturday, June 17, at the Malcolm X Outside Event Plaza at 3448 Evans St. Omaha, NE 68111.
The festival commemorates Juneteenth, a significant holiday that pays tribute to the liberation of enslaved individuals in the United States. Its purpose is to educate, empower and entertain the Omaha community, shedding light on North Omaha's rich culture and promoting awareness of local, social and business resources. This event is made possible through the generous support of community sponsors, personal donations, and dedicated volunteers who come together to honor the past by uniting the community in celebration.
This free event will offer plenty of family-friendly activities such as arts and crafts, carnival games, local musicians, and more. Special stage moments will include a reading from Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation by Cynthia L. Robinson from the Department of Black Studies at the University of Nebraska- Omaha.
After a day filled with raffles, food vendors, and picnics, settle down for late night performances hosted by Josh Jones of Beats N Sheets Karaoke with Ivan Alferez and DJ Chain. Featured performances include Musiq Soulchild, Lyfe Jennings, and Enjoli & Timeless.
