Casa de la Cultura invites the Omaha community to a lively and immersive Día de los Muertos celebration at the Kiewit Luminarium on Saturday, November 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This annual Mexican holiday, known for honoring the return of loved ones from the afterlife, will come alive with music, dance, and tradition in an evening designed to capture the essence of this beautiful cultural event.

Día de los Muertos, a cherished two-day celebration, blends ancient Aztec customs with Spanish influences, creating a meaningful way for families to honor and remember their ancestors. A highlight of the tradition is the building of ofrendas (altars) that are adorned with photos, favorite foods, and cherished mementos of the departed. At the center of these altars are the bright and fragrant flor de cempasúchil (marigold flowers), which are believed to help guide spirits safely home.

This special event at the Kiewit Luminarium will embrace the heart of Día de los Muertos, giving attendees a chance to celebrate their loved ones while engaging in meaningful cultural activities.

“Time flies by as we tend to our daily tasks and responsibilities. What’s unique about Dia de Los Muertos is that we can all be present with those who are no longer with us. We have five ofrendas on the floor at the Luminarium that hold offerings of all sorts,” said Brenton Gomez, Kiewit Luminarium’s program coordinator. “Marigolds line the front entrance to set the stage for the guests’s experience in the space. Our event will host a traditional Mexican folk dance group, Raices de Mexico, as well as a DJ Chelita, a raffle and prizes. We want to make the Luminarium one of the homes in the community that celebrates Dia de Los Muertos with intentionality. It’s an honor to collaborate with Casa de La Cultura for this evening to further our commitment to that intentionality.”

  • Live Music by DJ Chelita to keep the energy flowing all evening
