Omaha Mayor Proclaims National Girls & Women in Sports Day, EPIC to Host Week-Long Celebration

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert will proclaim National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Feb. 5. This proclamation will serve as a main event for the nonprofit EPIC for Girls’ “Lead HER Forward Sports Week”, a week-long celebration from Jan. 31 to Feb. 8 aimed at empowering and celebrating girls and women in sports.
The week-long celebration, hosted by EPIC for Girls, will bring together the community, local collegiate and professional sports teams, and community leaders to highlight the importance of female sports participation. Creighton University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Bellevue University, and SET The Bar are among the venues scheduled to host events. Featuring engaging sports events and raffles, the celebration is designed to inspire and empower girls, connect them to athletes, and promote community engagement.

Jan. 31, 7 PM: Omaha Supernovas vs. Columbus Fury
Feb. 1, 2 PM: UNO Mavericks vs. South Dakota State
Feb. 2, 10 AM: Creighton Sports Clinic for Youth
Feb. 2, 1 PM: Creighton Bluejays vs. Providence
Feb. 5, 5 PM: SET the Bar: Athlete Meet & Greet and Watch Party
Feb. 7, 5:30 PM: Bellevue Bruins vs. Dakota State
Feb. 8, 2 PM: College of Saint Mary Flames vs. Waldorf
“Our goal is to create opportunities for girls to see themselves in sports, not just as participants but as leaders and changemakers,” said Kimberly Thomas, executive director of EPIC for Girls. “We are committed to increasing access and visibility for girls of color, where opportunities are often limited, ensuring they have the support to thrive in athletics and beyond.”
