Social Media Designer Sahory Martinez Learns to Live, Not Simply Exist

MY FIVE: A series where we ask Omahans to share their five favorite things

By Xitlally Velasco

Sahory Martinez, our My Five spotlight, shares her top faves. Keep scrolling to discover what they are!

1. Family/Friends.

I really value my loved ones; they are truly the people who have helped me become a better person. They bring constant laughs and unforgettable memories, and the idea of sharing similar emotions with another individual who is not myself makes it more significant. Without them, I don’t believe I would have made it this far.

2. Horse Riding.

Horses are my favorite animal. If you get to raise one and connect with one, you’ll realize that they are complete emotional babies. Just like me, horses love the wild. Feeling the adrenaline when I run them makes me feel alive and free, like nothing in the world bothers me.

3. Gold Jewelry.

My cadenas, esclavas, earrings and rings hold a special meaning; they are also my must-haves! Behind every piece of jewelry I wear is a story, especially since they were gifted to me. From my bautizo to my quinceañera, I’ve always kept them safe and with me. Without them, I feel like I’m missing something important and, in a way, a bit naked.

4. Filming/Documenting.

Memories are everything to me! As someone who previously had a concussion that caused me to be forgetful, I cherish taking videos or pictures of moments that I want to keep alive forever. Unfortunately my biggest enemy is my phone storage, oh my how stressful it is having to clear it up. Regardless, I will always film what is happening around me because I would love for my future self to look back at and for my kids to see how life used to be.

5. Outgoing.

As shy as I am, believe it or not, I love to be outgoing. I live for the adrenaline rush I get when trying something new. Whether it be risk, food, clothes, roller coasters, church, events, festivals, etc. I am down to try and do anything. My life motto that I live by is “Learn to live, not just exist.” It resonates with me because it shows that we shouldn’t minimize our lives; we are meant to live and fully experience it!
