Support your Elders

Heartland Family Services Generations Community Center recently announced it will be closing its doors on September 30. The center has served as a resource for recreational, social and nutritional needs for individuals over 60. The North Omaha facility has been operating for more than 30 years. Support for the organization’s services has dwindled over the years and can no longer be sustained. However, a group of women relying on its services led the charge and started a GoFundMe. The Group G-Force 60 is asking for $300,000 to keep the center open.

Show up for Women’s Sports

Omaha’s about to get a new hub to enjoy women’s sports. Expected to open in Benson this December, SET the Bar is owned by Molly Huyck and Amy Hannesson, who aim to bring an inclusive environment to sports. This will be Nebraska's first women’s sports bar and seventh in the country. Interest in women’s sports continues to grow; the 2024 Women’s Basketball National Championship was the most-watched basketball game since 2019, with 18.9 viewers. And we can’t forget the record-breaking attendance of a Nebraska women’s volleyball game. Then, of course, most recently, it’s safe to say women dominated the Summer Olympics in Paris. Let’s show up and support SET the Bar this winter.

A Home for Artists

Come to the Union for Contemporary Art at 2423 N. 24th St. on Aug. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to see the new Kali Baker Studio. The studio is named after the late Kali Baker, a founding member of the Union’s board of directors. The open house will allow attendees to learn more about the Studio 24 Residency, an artist residency for BIPOC creatives. Each year, the Union invites three artists to join the residency. The event will be casual, and refreshments will be provided.
