El Museo Latino is hosting an opening reception and artist talk with the creator of its newest exhibit, Jaime Arredondo. Arredondo’s exhibit is called “Popol Vuh: The Sacred Book of the Quiché Through Illustration.

The reception starts at 6 pm, with the artist talk at 6:30 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for college students, and $3.30 for k-12 students & seniors.

Humanities Nebraska reports that Arredondo hopes to restore the former glory of the Popol Vul and its authors.

The Popul Vul is a text recounting the mythology and history of the K’iche people of Guatemala, one of the Maya people who also inhabit the Mexican states id Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, as well as areas of Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras,

Arredondo also hopes that his work will lead to a greater discussion and interest of the defense of stories, art, and culture of Native and Indigenous peoples.

Arredondo was born in Dallas, Texas to Mexican American Tejano parents. In 2009 his paintings were published as stamps by the United Nations, and in 2015 he was commissioned to create a permanent art project for the Manhattan Transit Authority comprised of 36 mosaics of his works, installed at the Zerega Station in the Bronx.
